In Britain, people tend to make jokes about some jobs or professions, or to hold stereotyped views of them. For example, sailors are supposed to have a "wife" in every port, university professors are often seen as absent-minded or forgetful. There are a lot of dirty jokes about sales representatives, and they are generally regarded as not particularly dependable. Other jobs may be well paid or very responsible, but the general public thinks they are funny or rather boring. For instance, in most other European countries to be an engineer is to be somebody. Funnily enough, in Britain engineers are thought of as gloomy rather than cheerful as a result of people's ignorance of the importance of the engineer's role in society.

Even though the Equal Opportunities Commission has made some progress in Britain, some jobs are still seen as being more suitable for men, or for women. For example, nurses and secretaries are often assumed to be professions for females. And managerial posts, such as managers, heads of departments are supposed to be more suitable for men rather than for women.

School children will have a more difficult time skipping classes in the future if a software program that lets parents monitor their children catches on.

A start-up company called SchoolSoft, based in Cupertino, Calif., unveiled an upgrade to its software that lets parents monitor their children's performance in school over the Internet.

The company has developed software that runs on 3Com.  Corp.'s popular PalmPilot handheld computers. SchoolSoft resells the PalmPilot to schools, pre-loaded with SchoolSoft software, plus programs to run on a school's network server. School teachers can then enter into the PahnPilot student attendance data, grades, homework assignments, activities and the like, which are sent to the school's central server. Later, parents with either Internet access or just a telephone can access the school's server for updates from the teacher. Before the software upgrades, parents could only access the system via the telephone.

Jim Weldon, SchoolSoft founder and chief executive, said the company at present has an installed base of about 330 schools around the United States, and that the software was used for children in the kindergarten all the way up to the secondary school. "In high school, parents really want to track activities, grades, etc. —how do they get on track to go to college?" said Weldon. "Children also have access as well to their academic records...Sometimes you don't know where you are."

When asked if many children have objected to their parents using the software, Weldon said that most are aware of the advantages the software can provide, such as letting them know about grades and performance issues in school—long before report cards arrive.

Computers have become so necessary to modern living that it is difficult to believe that they are a relatively recent invention. Undoubtedly, they have proved to be of great value, but they also have their disadvantages. For one thing, they have added to our already large number of crimes.

Hacking was the first computer crime that most of us became aware of. By using their computing expertise, people known as hackers can gain unauthorized access to someone else's computer and make use of the data which they find there. They may, for example, get hold of lists of the names of their competitor's clients and use these to build up their own businesses or they may use hacking as a form of industrial espionage to find out a rival company's plans. Other hacking activities may be more obviously criminal, in that hackers may log on to financial data in someone else's computer and either alter it illegally or use it for fraudulent purposes.

The possibility of serious financial fraud has been greatly increased by the modern practice of purchasing goods through the Internet. Apparently, the use of credit cards to pay for purchases has led to record levels of fraud with a great many people being swindled out of a great deal of money. Banks are working hard to improve online security and to provide safeguards for customers, but fraudsters are working just as hard to improve their crooked techniques.

Many computer users worry in case their systems are affected by computer viruses. The people who introduce such bugs into other people's computer programs may not intentionally be committing a crime but may be doing so as an act of mischief or spite. The motive does not really matter to the people whose data has been deleted or altered or whose files have been corrupted.

Computers are part of a highly technical method of working, in which there are constantly new developments. Unfortunately, there is also a constant stream of new developments in the fraud industry associated with them all. All computer users must be on their guard.

61、 From the passage we can conclude that ______.

The Open University is different from all other universities. Its students must be at least twenty-one years old. They must either work full-time or be at home all day, for instance, mothers of families. They don't have to pass any examinations before being accepted as students. This is why the university is called "open". The university was started in order to help people who missed having a university education when they were young.

The first name for the Open University was "The University of the Air". The idea was to teach "on the air", in other words, on the radio and television. They have brought the classroom into people's homes. But this, on its own, is not enough for a university education. So the students also have to receive advice at one of the 283 study centers in the country. Thirty-six weeks of the year they have to send written work to a "tutor", the person who guides their studies. They must also spend three weeks every summer as a full-time student. Tutors and students meet and study together, as in other universities. At the end of the first year, most students pass their exams. Normally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate, and each course which he attends gives him a credit which he may count towards a degree.  In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty-six courses each lasting for one semester. A typical course consists of three classes per week for fifteen weeks. While attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year. It is possible to spread the period of work for the degree over a longer period. It is also possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice.

For every course that he follows, a student is given a grade, which is recorded and the record is available for the student to show to prospective employers. All this imposes a constant pressure and strain of work, but in spite of this some students still find time for great activities in student affairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much enthusiasm. The effective work of maintaining discipline is usually performed by students who advise the academic authorities. Any student who is thought to have broken the rules, for example, by cheating has to appear before a student court. With the enormous numbers of students, the operation of the system does involve a certain amount of activity. A student who has held one of these positions of authority is much respected and it will be of benefit to him later in his career.
