Do women talk more than men? According to Professor Deborah Tannen of Georgetown University, men and women talk such different languages that they are like people from different cultures trying to communicate. Professor Deborah Tannen has noticed the differences in the styles of boys' and girls' conversations from an early age. She says that little girls' conversation is less certain than boys' and express more doubts. These differences remain unchanged when they grow up. In public conversations, men talk most and interrupt other speakers more. In private conversations, men and women speak in more or less the same amount—although they say things in different styles. Professor Tannen believes that, for women, private talking is a way to test closeness in a relationship. For men, it is a way to build up the power of relationship.

Teaching is a job where the differences between men's and women's ways of talking show. When a man teaches a woman, he wants to show that he has more knowledge and more power in conversation. He uses his language to show this. When a woman teaches another woman, however, she is more likely to encourage her student to join in. But Professor Tannen does not believe that women are naturally more helpful. She says that women feel they can build up power by being able to help others.

11、According to Professor Deborah Tannen, the styles in which men and women talk are ______.

A. rather different                            B. very colorful

12、 When they grow up, the differences in the boys' and girls' conversations ______.

A. become smaller                            B. remain the same

C. become greater                            D. no longer exist

13、 In public conversations, men tend to ______.

A. listen more                                B. encourage others to talk

C. talk more                                  D. let women talk more

14、 In a private conversation, it is often true that ______.

A. a woman will take the lead of the talk

B. a man's talk is similar to that of a woman in amount

C. a woman will test her power in her relationship with the listener

D. a man will try to build up a close relationship with the listener

15、 In teaching, men teachers are likely to ______.

A. let students talk more                      B. be more helpful than women teachers

C. encourage students to join in               D. show their knowledge and power

One silly question I simply cannot bear is "How do you feel?". Usually the question is asked of a man in action. So what do you expect him to say? He'll probably say, "Fine, I'm all right." However, you have put a bug (小昆虫) in his ear—maybe now he is not sure. If you are his good friend, you may have seen something on his face, or in his walk, which he overlooked that morning. It makes him a little worrying. He looks in a mirror to see if everything is all right, while you go cheerfully on your way asking someone else, "How do you feel?"

Every question has its time and place. It's acceptable, for example, to ask "How do you feel?" if you are visiting a close friend in the hospital. But if the fellow is walking on both legs, hurrying to take a train or sitting at his desk working, it' s not time to ask him that silly question.

When George Bernard Shaw, the famous British writer of plays, was in his eighties, someone asked him, "How do you feel?" He said, "When you reach my age, either you feel all right or you are dead."

C. it is not right to say it to a friend

D. it makes people angry

18、 What does "It" mean in the sentence "It makes him a little worrying." in Paragraph 1? ______

A. The bug in his ear.

B. The question "How do you feel?".

C. Not a correct sentence.

D. A problem.

19、 What does Shaw' s answer imply? ______

A. The man could not live to be eighty.

B. He was feeling all right.

C. The man was familiar with him.

D. He wanted the man to shut his mouth.

20、 Which of the statements is TRUE according to the passage? ______

A. We should ask "How do you feel?" when a man is busy working.

B. We make others at ease when we ask them "How do you feel?".
