Part Ⅱ Reading Comprehension

Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or incomplete statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and then mark the corresponding letter on the ANSWER SHEET.

Passage One

People who work night shifts are constantly fighting against an "internal clock" in their bodies. Quite often the clock tells them to sleep when their job requires them to remain fully awake.

There's no wonder that more accidents happen during night shifts than any other time. Light therapy with a bright light box can help night-shift workers adjust their internal clock. However, many doctors recommend careful planning to help improve sleep patterns. For example, night-shift workers often find it difficult to sleep in the morning when they get off work because the body's natural rhythm fights back, no matter how tired they are.

Some experts recommend that night-shift workers schedule two smaller sleep periods: one in the morning after work, and another longer one in the afternoon, closer to when the body would naturally need to sleep. It's also helpful to ask friends and family to cooperate by avoiding visits and phone calls during the times when you are sleeping.

31、 Night-shift workers are those who ______.

A. have to work at night                B. fall asleep late at night

C. need to adjust their clock             D. have to rely on their internal clock

32、 Many doctors think it is helpful for night-shift workers ______.

A. to sleep as long as possible after work

B. to carefully plan their sleep patterns

C. to sleep under light therapy

D. to avoid visits and phone calls

33、 In order to remain fully awake at work, people working night shifts should ______.

A. pay more attention to their work

B. have longer sleep periods after work

C. make the light darker than usual

D. try to reset their "internal clock"

34、 Night-shift workers often find it difficult to sleep in the morning because ______.

A. they are too tired to go to sleep

B. they are often disturbed by morning calls

C. their internal clock will not allow them to

D. they are not trying hard enough to sleep

35、 According to the passage, some experts recommend that night-shift workers should ______.

A. improve their family relationship      B. rely heavily on light therapy

C. visit their relatives frequently          D. have two smaller sleep periods

Passage Two

In a land far away, once upon a time there was great poverty and only the rich could manage without great problems. Three of those rich men and their servants were traveling together on a road when they came to a very faraway village.

The first could not stand seeing the poverty, so he took all the gold and jewels from his wagons and shared them out among the villagers. He wished them all the best of luck, and he left. The second rich man, seeing the worrying situation, stopped for a short time and gave the villagers all his food and drink, since he could see that money would be of little use to them. He made sure that they each received their fair share and would have enough food to last for some time. Then, he left.

The third rich man, on seeing such poverty, turned back and went straight through the village without stopping. The two other rich men saw this from a distance and commented with each other how the third rich man lacked sympathy. It was good that they themselves had been there to offer help.0

However, three days later, they met the third rich man, who was coming in the opposite direction. He was still traveling quickly, but his wagons, instead of the gold and valuables they had been carrying, were now full of farming tools and bags of seeds. Passage Three

We find that bright children are rarely held back by mixed-ability teaching. On the contrary, both their knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming pupils. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright child. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be bottom of the top grade!

Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning.

In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups; this gives them the opportunity to learn to cooperate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to deal with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.

Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work; it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.

Passage Four

Want to stay away from colds? Put on a happy face.

Compared to unhappy people, those who are cheerful and relaxed are less likely to suffer from colds, according to a new study, It's possible that being happy helps the body fight illnesses, said the researchers from New York University.

"It seems that positive feelings may reduce the danger of illness," said the study's chief researcher Sheldon Cohen. In an earlier study, Cohen found that people who were cheerful and lively caught coughs and colds less often. People who showed positive feelings were also less likely to tell their doctors that they felt ill.

In this study, Cohen interviewed 193 adults every day for two weeks. During the interviews, people told researchers about the happy or sad feelings they had that day.

After two weeks, people were given colds by doctors and had to stay alone in a room for six days. The results showed that everyone in the study was equally likely to get ill. But for people who said they felt happy during the research period, their illnesses were less serious and lasted for a shorter time.

Cohen believes that when people experience positive feelings, their body may produce a chemical that helps fight illnesses and diseases. So if you are worried about your health, look on the bright side more often.
